Ever wonder what would be a cool thing to make with that cast iron skillet you’ve got stashed away? Well, the answer is here, Cast Iron Skillet Pizza. Most people do not own a pizza oven and conventional ovens, even with a pizza stone, do not always attain a nice crust. Using the cast iron skillet helps to crisp the crust like you would get from a pizza oven and if you want, you could make a deep dish pizza as well. Here’s how I made it:
This recipe is super easy. I made a homemade pizza dough in my trusty Kitchen Aid Mixer but, you can easily use a store bought raw pizza dough. The skillet I used was a 10 inch cast iron, but you can use a larger or smaller one. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Next, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to cover the bottom and sides of the skillet, and sprinkle a little corn meal in the pan over the oil. Next, roll out and stretch your pizza dough to fit the skillet, it can go up the sides a little. Once you have it in the pan on top of the oil and corn meal, top with your favorite pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings. Sometimes I like to make a Hawaiian pizza but in this case I just used sausage, mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese. Heat the skillet over med high heat for about 5 – 6 min. checking the bottom of the dough and brown to a light golden brown, Once dough is golden brown on the bottom, pop the whole pan into the oven and bake at 425 for about 25 min. or until brown and bubbly.
When the pizza is done, carefully remove the skillet from the oven (careful, it’s hot and heavy), remove pizza from skillet and slide onto a cutting board. If you can resist, let it cool for a few minutes before cutting. At this time, you can start another one if you need more pizza or, if you have two skillets, you can make two at a time.
